March 21, 2018 - Blue-backed Manakin (Chiroxiphia pareola)

These manakins are found in parts of northern and eastern South America. They eat small fruits and insects, foraging alone or in pairs. Males display at leks to attract females, often coordinating their calls and movements with other males. These groups of males include a dominant breeding male and one or more subordinates. The subordinate males gain experience displaying and eventually take the older male’s place. Females build small cup-shaped nests from plant materials and spiderwebs. They incubate the eggs and care for the chicks alone.
