Pycnonotus melanicterus

Description

Pycnonotus melanicterus is a medium sized bird that is 18 cm and is included in the Pycnonotidae family. The upper body side is olive green, the underside is yellow. The head is dark black, with a red color on the throat (except for the Kalimantan race which is yellow). Black beak and legs. The irises are reddish or white in color, and they chirp beautifully.

Distribution

Pycnonotus melanicterus can be found in rainforests, usually at the end of the forest. In Sumatra, it is found in the lowlands and hills to an altitude of 1,200 m. In Java, it is generally found in the western and southern parts, namely in lowland forests up to an altitude of 1,500 masl. In Borneo, it is more common in the mountains, and is a resident species. This bird was introduced to Singapore. In 1986, this species was discovered for the first time in Bali, namely the West Bali National Park.

This species usually eats fruits and plants from the genus Ficus spp., Lantana camara, Dendrocnide spp., And Ardisia spp .. besides, it also eats Hymenoptera, Isoptera, and insect larvae. When eating, it sometimes joins other species in one family.

Mating Habits

The eggs of this species are two in number and are reddish-white, like the color of the soil and have many specks. The nests are large, deep neat chalices and are found at the ends of small tree stumps or on forked branches made of grass and glued to spider webs. Breed in August. While in Ceylon, breed is recorded in January and May, and reportedly spawn every month from January to May.
