The COCOS ISLAND FLYCATCHERThe Cocos Island Flycatcher (Nesotriccus ridgwayi) is one of the few bird species endemic to Costa Rica. Found on Cocos Island, this bird is about 13 centimeters and has been adapted to live almost everywhere on the island. Similar to a grey flycatcher, the Cocos Island Flycatcher is grayish-olive with some brown. It also has faint eyebrows and a long bill.
From habitats at sea-level to the highest hills, the Cocos Island Flycatcher can be found with thousands of other individuals just like it. Breeding takes place sometime between January and March. Their diet consists of insects and some fruits. Like the Cocos Island Cuckoo, cats and rats are its largest predators, but pigs cause devastating effects to the population by destroying the forests and habitats of these birds. |
