The Wattled Broadbill or Mindanao Broadbill (Sarcophanops steerii) is a species of bird in the family Eurylaimidae where it was previously conspecific to the Visayan Broadbill. It is endemic to some islands of Mindanao and is one of the most striking birds in the country with its sky-blue wattle and bill and yellow wing patch. The species is included in the DENR DAO 2019-09 categorized as Vulnerable (VU) with an estimated population of 2,500 to 9,999.
Biography: Endemic to the islands of Mindanao, Basilan, Dinagat and Siargao in the Philippines
Habitat: Generally found below1,000m but occasionally up to 1,200m elevation tropical moist lowland forests, tropical mangrove forests, tropical moist shrub lands as their natural habitats. There are occasional recordings from mangroves and even in scrub forests on dry , rocky substrates.
Diet: They are opportunistic feeders and feed mainly on insects like most Broadbills.
Physical Appearance: medium-sized bird of Mindanao and neighboring islands lowland and foothill forest, with light blue bill and eye wattle, balck-faced, patterned crown, dark-backed with a white-and-yellow wing bar, white collared and reddish rump and tail. They are sexually dimorphic in which the males have reddish-pink colored bellies while female having clean white bellies.
