Rufous-gorgeted flycatcher is found in subtropical and tropical forest and thick secondary scrub and edges at an elevation of 915m to 1830m during winters and above 2440 to 3965m for breeding. As the name suggests the male has a distinctive rufous patch on the throat while the female has a duller orange patch. The male and the female also have a white pattern in the forehead which extends to the above of the eyes and the female has a less distinct one. Olive-brownish upperpart and rear crown hindneck, black cheek and throat, white patch on the side of the trail are what separates a male from a female which has a pale slate-grey center of the lower breast.
