Network configuration for Ubuntu 7.10

This document tries to explain how to configure a network interface on a machine running Ubuntu Linux 7.10 to be usable on our Laptop Network. If things arn't clear please let us know.

Recent versions of Ubuntu default to network settings which will work without needing changes. Therefore most Ubuntu users can probably ignore most of this. However you may have needed to alter them to use another network, so this document describes the expected settings.

Network tcp/ip settings

Log into the machine as a user with Admin privelages and go to the System Administration Network menu item.

This will launch the Network Settings tool, which will prompt for your administration password.

System Admin Network menu

Select the apprpriate network interface and click on Properties.

    Settings

Ensure that the Enable roaming mode is checked - this should be the default anyway. Click on the OK button.

If you use different network settings in different places, you can use the Location field to save different sets of network settings.

Then close the Network Settings tool.

Use DHCP

The new settings should take effect at once. If they do not you may need to disable/re-enable the network interface, or disconnect/re-connect the network cable.

Other configs

This setup has been tested on Ubuntu 7.10. Configuration should be very similar for other fairly recent versions of Ubuntu. For details on how to configure network interfaces on other versions of Ubuntu please refer to the documentation provided with the system or contact your local computer support staff.
