but sometimes sparingly branched, eventually to 1m or more across, but slow-growing and generally much less in cultivation. Leaves tiny, scale-like, closely overlapping. Flowers (stroboli) dioecious, small and insignificant. Female "cones" consisting of one scarlet scale in which the single seed is more or less embedded. Subalpine; on mountain moorland and exposed ridges at 1000-1500m.
